How to Help

We are always in need of extra hands! For The Dohickey Project to grow we need more people that are able to help maintain the project. If after reading this page, you think you can help, please use the mailing lists on the right hand side of the page to give us a heads up. We could use some volunteers to help with the following jobs:

Hardware Information

You may have a lot of hardware that is not recognized by your Linux system. We need you to research your hardware, and submit the information into our online databases.

  • This requires spelling and research skills.
Translations

Many many parts of dohickey needs translations into localised languages, this includes the client, the hardware information it's self and the fields definitions.

Administration

We need people to help administrate incoming hardware data. You would have to look at the data, and allow the data that is correct to pass through. If you notice discrepancies in the data, or recognize the data as an abuse of the system, you would prevent the data from showing up in the database.

  • Requires no programming skills.
  • You must be a consistent, reliable admin.
  • You must have the ability to verify submitted data.
Dohickey Server Programmers

This involves improving and upgrading the way the server aspect of Dohickey works. It would include better processing of incoming data, and providing services to search and maintain the database, as well as the web based administration tools.

  • Needs to have a good understanding of object oriented Perl.
  • Experience with HTML, CSS, and CGI.
Dohickey Client Programmers

This involves modification and improvement to the Dohickey client application.

  • Requires moderate knowledge of Python (but of course, advanced knowledge would be even better).
  • GTK+2 experience is always welcome.
  • Requires knowledge of HTTP client and XML
